jordan is in northwest d.c. tonight where some homeowners are going to have a lot of cleaning up to do once sandy leaves town. richard? >> reporter: yeah, doreen, we're getting just another strong burst of wind and that's what keeps bringing these trees and branchs down. some of them really small and then just a few minutes ago, this large branch came down. it snapped and just fell. right in front of our eyes. we heard a loud pop and all of the sudden, half the tree was there on the street. and then the real big one, the heavy duty one. that is that giant tree right there. this one fell onto a home here in northwest d.c. you can see the root system there. so imagine what's on the other side. that large tree fell right on to the roof of someone's home and there were two people inside. let's take you to the video. those residents were just fine. they were not hurt. nay say they were just taken by surprise. they say all of the sudden, they heard the wind picking up. it would pick up and calm down. and, in one of those moments when the wind picked up, there came this loud bang and the tree

into a house this afternoon. >> we find news4's richard jordan. richard, tell us what happened there. >> reporter: first off, we can tell you that the couple that was inside the house is safe. firefighters were able to get them out and put them into a neighbor's home. there is still power throughout the neighborhood. however, the street is blocked off. this is nevada and nebraska. you can see the fire trucks, police trucks lined up here. right now what they're trying to do is assess the damage to that home. it appears, according to police, a strong burst of wind came through this neighborhood, knocked this large tree down. now, when that tree came down, branches from some of the trees right next to it also snapped. so not only was the home that was directly impacted, does that have a big hole right through the roof, but also the neighbor's home was clipped by some of these larger branches as well. so right now, what firefighters are doing is they're actually going through the home, making sure it is not compromised. the integrity of the home is not compromised, to see if maybe the re

jordan was out and about this afternoon in northwest d.c. he continues our team coverage now, where a tree fell on a house today. richard? >> reporter: yeah, jim and pat, i just spoke briefly with the couple that lives inside the house. they were home when this tree came down on top of their roof. they're assuming it was a strong burst of wind that came by. but you can see the large tree from their backyard just fell on top of their home. it also clipped some of the other trees nearby. so other branches came down as well, even the neighbor's home suffered some roof damage. all this happening here, nevada and nebraska, the couple that lives inside, fortunately they were not hurt. they were able to go back into their home, escorted by d.c. emergency management workers. they went inside to grab a couple of their belongings, then they were sent over to their neighbor's home. that's where they're going to stay at least for the time being. the fire crews are out here, as well as police, just trying to assess the damage to the homes and see if there was any structural damage. they have sin
chief howard jordan says he wants to fire two officers, demote one, send three to counseling and training, suspend 15 officers and reprimand 23 others. meanwhile, the police association is furious, accusing the department of scapegoating officers and blames a lack of planning and putting officers in difficult positions during the protests. oakland mayor jean quan says the majority of officers obey the law and protect the city. she calls chief jordan's recommendations fair and balanced. >> because the complaints are wide ranging complaints, from covering up your badge to not having your camera on, to actually hurting somebody. so it's a wide range. >> she says the city plans to have a ruling on all complaints by october 25th, the one-year deadline required by the state. >>> new this morning, the san francisco giants are back in the bay area, getting ready for the national league championship series.
